The tribes that live in the lower Omo Valley are believed to be among the most fascinating on the continent of Africa and around the world. Tours are offered to several towns and villages.  It is often you come into contact with the following tribes: Arbore, Ari, Bena, Bodi, Bumi, Daasanech (Geleb), Dorze, Hamer (Hamar), Kara (or Karo), Konso, Kwegu (or Muguji), Mursi, Tsemay, and Turkana when you tour the valley.

 

D1 MON ADDIS ARRIVAL DAY             

On arrival be transferred to your hotel in Addis Ababa.

Overnight at  Ambassador Hotel


D2 Tue EARLY MORNING START FOR AN ALL DAY DRIVE TO DORZE.

Drive over rolling hills of the Gurage highlands stopping for scenic stops and a coffee break in Butajira and lunch in either Hosainna or Sodo. Finally head up to the Guge highlands to spend the night in a traditional Dorze hut provided for visitors. See how the Dorze build their bamboo/ensette houses and learn about their way of life. You will have an evening here of traditional Dorze dance and food / Tsehai Dorze Lodge
 
D3 Wed DORZE - KONSO (125 KM / 3 HRS DRIVE).

In the morning continue your cultural visit of Dorze and then proceed to Konso for an afternoon cultural excursion of the Konso village including the Konso chief’s compound. End your excursion with a tour of the Konso museum / Kanta Lodge
 
D4 THUR KONSO – KEY AFAR MARKET (110 KM) - JINKA (47 KM) / OMO ECOLODGE
Drive from Konso to Jinka, on the way stop in Key Afar to visit the colorful market here frequented by the Benna, Ari, and Tsemai tribes. After market and lunch, carry on to Jinka where you will visiting the museum. Overnight at a safari style lodge situated in a forest on the edge of a small river.
 
D5 FRI  JINKA – MURSI (75 KM, 1 HR DRIVE) (CAMPING IN MURSI, MAGO OR RETURN TO JINKA)
After breakfast, go on a cultural excursion of an Ari settlement followed by lunch. After lunch, drive to Mago National park to camp with the Mursi tribe and learn about their unique culture… lip plates of the women and their semi-pastoral lifestyle.
 
D6 SAT MURSI – DIMEKA HAMMER MARKET – TURMI / BUSKA LODGE
Leave Mursi after packing up camp. You will have time for a break in Jinka before continuing to Turmi. On the way, stop in the Hammer town of Dimeka to experience the Saturday Hamer market here. Continue to Turmi where you will stay at Buska Lodge situated along the Kaske River.
 
D7 SUN TURMI – KARO (MURULLE) (90 KM)– TURMI / BUSKA LODGE (ABOUT 3 HR DRIVE)
After an early breakfast, take a 1.5 hour driving excursion to Karo where you will visit the Karo, a tribe related to the Hammer. These people live on the banks of the Omo River, and have a unique style of body painting imitating the markings of wild animals especially guinea fowl.
 
D8 MON TURMI – OMORATE (80 KM)– TURMI  (ABOUT 3 HR DRIVE) / BUSKA LODGE
After breakfast, go for a driving excursion to Omorate, a town on the banks of the Omo River. Here you will cross the Omo River by boat to visit a settlement of the Dasanech tribe. Return to Turmi for lunch and and afternoon Hammer cultural experience. The Turmi Hammer market is on Monday.
 
D9 TUES TURMI – GIDOLE CULTURAL EXCURSION (5 HRS DRIVE) – ARBAMINCH / PARADISE LODGE
After breakfast drive to Arbaminch via the small town of Gidole up in the Gardula mountain. Experience the Dirashe market, culture and dance here. Continue to Arbaminch where you will spend the night.
 
D10 WED BOAT SAFARI ON LAKE CHAMO – FLY TO ADDIS OR DRIVE TO LANGANO, RIFT VALLEY LAKE THIS DAY / SABANA LODGE OR HOTEL IN ADDIS
This morning you will drive 20 km to Lake Chamo for a 2 hour boat safari. Enjoy sightings of hippos, crocodiles and the many types of water and shore birds. Return to Arbaminch for lunch and catch afternoon flight back to Addis. Option to drive back via the Rift Valley spending the night on the shores of Lake Langano.
 
D11 INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE / OR DRIVE LANGANO TO ADDIS
After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to airport for your international departure. Optional city tour  or other activity if your flight is in the evening.
